TheNEWgardenersboyhadlonghairwhichhekeptinplacebyapieceofstufftiedroundhisheadwithalittlebow.Hewaswalkingalongthepathwithhiswatering-canfilledtothebrimandhisotherarmstretchedouttobalancetheload.Slowly,carefully,hewateredthenasturtiumsasifpouringoutcoffeeandmilk,untiltheearthatthefootofeachplantdissolvedintoasoftblackpatch;whenitwaslargeandmoistenoughheliftedthewatering-canandpassedontothenextplant.Maria-nunziatawaswatchinghimfromthekitchenwindow,andthinkingwhatanicecalmjobgardeningmustbe.Hewasagrownyouth,shenoticed,thoughhestillworeshortsandthatlonghairmadehimlooklikeagirl.Shestoppedwashingthedishesandtappedonthewindow.
"Hey,boy,"shecalled.
Thegardenersboyraisedhishead,sawMaria-nunziataandsmiled.Shelaughedbackathim,partlybecauseshehadneverseenaboywithsuchlonghairandabowlikethatonhishead.Thegardenersboybeckonedtoherwithonehand,andMaria-nunziatawentonlaughingatthefunnygesturehedmade,andbegangesturingbacktoexplainthatshehadthedishestowash.
